Northeast Film Series: Celebrating the Multicultural Identity of Northeast
NE_FIlm_Series

As part of its 2012-13 Community Participation Program, the Logan Park Neighborhood Association initiated the Northeast Film Series: Celebrating the Multicultural Identity of Northeast. The series works to bring together people from diverse cultures in a non-meeting setting. Participants watch the film together, then share cultural-specific desserts and a post-film discussion.

2013 films include Bienvenue chez les Ch'tis - (Welcome to the Sticks) - a comedy about a French postman who tries to get transferred from the south of France to the French Riviera and instead gets banished to the far north if France - the sticks!; Le Grand Voyage - about a devout elderly Moroccan making his pilgrimage to Mecca with his irreligious unwilling young son doing the driving - and Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory - shown in Spanish.

April's screening of Le Grand Voyage attracted more than 60 attendees, with over 25 staying for an hour-long discussion lead by Minneapolis School Board member Hussein Samatar. The discussion included questions about the required pilgrimage to Mecca and other religious journeys, comparisons of immigrant experiences, and how gender and generational differences influence these experiences.

The Northeast Film Series is also supported by the Sheridan Neighborhood Organization.
